Some Love for Blackberry Users

I know Blackberry users haven’t been able to view the main site since the server move; that was caused by Blackberry’s spotty to non-existent support for Javascript, which is used to load the various site sections and update them at specified intervals.

I’ve now split the initial load task and the subsequent refreshes between PHP and JQuery respectively, so that the page should load normally initially and, on those Blackberries that don’t do Javascript, “fail gracefully” when the refresh is called.

The “fail gracefully” is what I’m interested in… so you can you Blackberry users tell me what happens after loading the site and waiting for 90 seconds for the “Recent Comments” section to refresh? What I hope you see is no change to the screen; whatever you see, please report it here in the comments. Thanks!

PLEASE NOTE that I haven’t made these changes to the mobile version of SF. I want to see how the standard site runs on Blackberries before addressing the mobile version.

For me, the main site is back up.

After the header loads, the recent comments come up, followed by the expected footer, then the buttons.

There’s some visible code:
[Flash: crk8W (etc.)]

followed by the expected articles. Clicking on one brings it up properly.

Thanks for your love, Greg. We likewise love you unconditionally. (Radical reappraisers please note: Greg and Rafe have never met and are not in a - AHEM - relationship. Neither were David and Jonathan.)

It works.

Let me clarify #1. What I saw was not seen, i.e., there was no perceived change to the screen, as you hoped. The smoke and mirrors have worked yet again.

Just FYI it loads beautifully on the iPhone- and fairly quickly even on 3G.

OK, 5 responses, of which one was a goof and one was a clarification… that’s good enough for me!

I’ll move on the mobile site and make some similar changes there.

To add a sixth response, I myself am deeply pleased at these changes for the Sweet Blackberry Users.  Only not perhaps entirely and solely for their sakes.
