[Off Topic] Dog flies to new life

Friday, July 30, 2010 • 2:16 pm

What a big raw-boned cute boy that is -- check out the pic!

From the Hi-Desert Star, where there is more:
The Yucca Valley Animal Shelter earned its wings last week when it partnered with Pilots N Paws to save a dog’s life.

“We had run out of options for Red,” said Jennifer Doan, an animal control officer at the shelter.

The 4-year-old red Doberman had a hard time staying in his yard and was a repeat customer at the facility. Red’s last owner was a mechanic who brought him back when he saw the dog was not thriving as a night guard dog at his auto yard.

Doan and kennel manager Kim Casey contacted Las Vegas Doberman and Dachshund Rescue, but they didn’t know how to get Red to the Nevada site. Then the officer remembered hearing about Pilots N Paws, a nationwide network of plane owners who volunteer to transport animals.

Early Wednesday morning, Red and shelter staffers met Pilots N Paws aviator Fabian Gonell at the Yucca Valley Airport.

“I got involved with Pilots N Paws after another pilot posted his experiences about it on an Internet message board run by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association,” Gonell recalled. “I’d been monitoring the board for a couple of months, looking for a request that I could help with. I love animals and I admire the work that rescue organizations do to help them.”

Comments:

Sarah,

Thank you for posting this heart-warming story.  I think Red is a beautiful dog and I am sure he will find a loving home!!  Arf, Arf!!
