Happy Progenitor A Day

From the Coalition for Marriage:

Dear marriage supporter,

When Spain redefined marriage the Spanish Government rewrote birth certificates, removing the words “father and mother” and replacing them with “progenitor A and progenitor B”.

So, this Father’s Day weekend, we have placed adverts on 13 websites wishing Britain “Happy Progenitor A’s Day”, and asking: “what will they change next?”

You can read the entire letter here.

Progenitor A and Progenitor B? How stupid is this? I agree with the comment- why is the male progenitor A ? Given the mother’s role as well as much larger egg vs the sperm,  the mother should be progenitor A. Besides if both progenitors are of the same gender, they can not have a biological child. Sorry,  the biology won’t work.  If same sex couples want a child, then one can be a biological parent but the other biological parent must be someone else.  This will really screw up genealogical research as well if the terms mother and father are not used.  This has to be one the dumbest decisions ever made.

SC blu cat lady,

The dumbest decision ever?  That’s a pretty big statement when one looks at the host of dumb decisions rendered to appease the GLBTXYZ lobby.  There have been so many dumb decisions made in this vein, I no longer attempt to separate them.  They are now all lumped under Gay Stuff.

Don’t worry, ladies, Spain’s been producing so few Progenitors A or B the past few decades that it soon won’t make the tiniest bit of difference what they call them.  Ditto most of the EU, whose love of fruitless coupling is second only to its infatuation with abortion.  Europe is abolishing itself.

I think someone out there ought to get together a GC resolution that henceforth all TEC clergy be addressed as “Progenitor” if their diocese performs gay marriages or promotes active gay clergy.  After all, how can they go on perpetuating a misogynistic, gender specific, paternalistic title?  The additional upside is that you could stop addressing women clergy as “mother,” which has ALWAYS been completely inappropriate, not to mention theologically absurd.

Jackie, Ok Maybe not the dumbest decision ever. However, the change in language is for what reason?? Must have missed that.  I pity the genealogists that try to decipher these records in a couple of decades. Really, was this change necessary?? No but hey it appeased a group of people…... good enough for some. As you say Jackie, there have been hosts of really dumb decisions….. Won’t stop future dumb decisions either.

Spain, if they had been a bit more foreward thinking should had boxes on their birth certificates for “Uterus Provided By,” “Ovum Provided By,” and “Sperm Donor.”

Pewster, I like your designations.  Those make sense and would apply to many situations and future genealogists could make their own conclusions.

If you really want to be “politically correct” in your designations on birth certificates then Pewster’s suggestions are simple and straight forward. Still mother and father apply to plenty of births, don’t really see the need to change now. Perhaps those situations which don’t fit “mother” and “father” situation could these terms.
