Further Meltdown in the Diocese of Georgia [Part Two]: More on the Departure of Calvary, Americus
Readers may recall that Calvary Americus [now renamed St. John’s Anglican] departed in April of this year from the Diocese of Georgia.
From the American Times-Recorder, where there is more:
The white understated storefront church adjacent to the feed and seed store and located at 411 W. Forsyth St., Americus was filled with joy, celebration and the Holy Spirit as 70 people were received into the Anglican Church in North America by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Foley Beach, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the South. The occasion was followed by a reception.

By golly, IT DOES GET BETTER. I am sure Bishop Benhase is ecstatic. “This is gonna ring the bells at 815- more conservatives gone! Another building to sell in a glutted market. Mint juleps all around!”

Is the Americus Times-Recorder a secular newspaper? Whether it is or it isn’t, by printing a large slab from the church’s news release it has disseminated an excellent summary of Christian doctrine to the public.
And thanks to recent controversies, unbelievers are more likely to read the whole thing now. Praise the Lord for that.

Bishop Benhase should be mourning the loss of what appears to be a fine group of Christians.
On the other hand, I guess he could consider it an example of how his diocese has stimulated and developed fine groups of Christians to go out into the world and spread the Gospel.

This makes my heart sing! Calvary Church, Americus is where I was confirmed in 1985 (after having been confirmed at Cragmore Christian Reformed, Colorado Springs, CO in 1973, and St. Peter’s Lutheran[LCMS], Monte vista, CO in 1950). I am a <b>confirmed<b> Christain! I moved around a lot. Calvary was using the same ancient liturgy that I had learned as a child in the LCMS, not a difficult transition for me.

The Americus Times-Recorder is the only newspaper in town…or was when I left in 1993. Small town, Wednesday night is “church night”; may as well not schedule anything else because every church had Wed. evening service and most of the population were church goers.

IF this a sign of a meltdown in TEC in the Southeast, it could be a huge loss for TEC. For 2002 through 2010 I have ranked 95 dioceses in TEC according to their changes in Members, ASA, and inflation adjusted Plate & Pledge. The top 5 are all in the Southeast. They are Tenn, East Carolina, South Carolins, North Carolina, and Western North carolina. Will same-sex blessing bee thaat line in the sand?? Statmann

Frances, very interesting insight, thank you. Sounds like John Mellencamp could have written a song about it ...
