Avoiding the Truth at All Costs

This is painful to watch. Joel Osteen tries every tactic in the book to avoid saying, clearly, yes the bible teaches homosexual behavior is sinful and the homosexual desire is disordered. This is what happens when you build a career on “trying to be positive” rather than the gospel which, necessarily, carries negative warning as well as joyful promise. There are so many simple clear answers Joel could have given were he not working so hard to avoid them.

Compare and contrast with John Macarthur on Larry King. Whatever else you might say or think about Macarthur,  he’s bold, firm and pastoral in response to similar questioning not only by King but by the gay man seated on his right.

Yeah, MacArthur is one of the few pastors I have heard give a straight answer.  Even Tim Keller, whom I usually have great respect for, waffled all over the place and did not give straight answers, trying to divert the discussion on to other things (“greed”):

I wish these pastors would make a distinction between homosexuality and homosxual acts.  They would avoid getting painted into corners at every turn and would be, I think, far more understandable and less mealy-mouthed, as Osteen came off as in spades.

We’re all sinners, we’re all tempted in our own desires.  It doesn’t matter if the temptations are genetic, deeply psychological or completely of our own free will.  What matters is how we respond to them.  THAT’s the message these guys need to convey.

Jeffersonian -

I agree entirely, noting only that using the term “homosexuality” is part of the problem. Clearly from context, you mean the affliction of same-sex attractions. But gay-rights advocates can bait-and-switch freely between attractions, acts, and a lifestyle built around same-sex attraction (which is what I mean by “gay”).  I originally created “Words Matter” as a soap box for this issue, because its been my observation that “homosexuality” is their word, and we should not let them control the conversation.

But I do agree with the substance of your comment. Attractions and acts are two different issues.

Thanks, WM.  My own raging heterosexuality causes me no ends of attraction to leggy women, but I resist the urge to coax them into bed because it simply is not God’s will that I do so (it also helps that Mrs. Jeffersonian has told me that failing to suppress these urges will cause me to leave this world with fewer parts than I came into it with).

The Left is unwaveringly deterministic, and thus cannot comprehend that we are not abject slaves to our biology.

Well said #4!

I personally know someone who was abused as a child by his father, and therefore when he became a teenager he fantisized by men.  So…the homosexual leaders want to DEFEND THIS?  Really?  My dorm dad encouraged him to “explore his sexuality”; fortunately his mom got him the help he needed instead.

#5—Getting someone the help they needed is now on the verge of becoming illegal in California.

Saddleback Church is in California. Warren must have a ministry to families that struggle with this. It will be interesting to see if “America’s Pastor” will take this to court, if there is conflict. It basically limits families from raising their children according to their conscience. But really… California is such a joke, it’s ceased to worry me a while ago. Anyone with any sense should really get out, as many sane people have already opted to do.
