Addressing The Oxymoron ’ Pro-Abortion Catholics’
“CINO”—or “Catholic in name only”—is an acronym used to describe a public figure who claims to be a member in good standing of a Catholic church but who supports concepts and actions that directly violate not only scripture but also their own church’s codes. Brown contends this type of “political corruption” is very popular today.
The name that most quickly comes to Brown’s mind when considering the growing CINO trend is Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker and Democrat extraordinaire. However, Brown does not find Pelosi’s blatant “hypocrisy” between the faith she claims (Catholic) and the issue she supports (abortion) to be the most upsetting aspect. What bothers the pro-life leader most is the failure – “inability or unwillingness,” she calls it – of the Catholic bishops to address this problem in their churches and communities.
According to the Family Research Council, Pelosi deems abstinence-only programs a danger to youth in America and believes “the only solution is to elect more pro-abortion politicians” – while at the same time calling herself a “devout Catholic” and mother of five children. Brown believes the Speaker has the right as an American to state her beliefs, even if they differ from the church she claims to be a part of; but Brown also contends such statements cannot go unaddressed by the authority of that same church when they directly violate its canon. Brown says “corrective statements should be made by [Roman Catholic] Church authorities who realize that [Pelosi’s] words are creating confusion and scandal, not only among Catholics but also among the population at large.”

I’d almost full heartedly agree with this article, but it’s actually going to take not Catholic clergy to solve this one, but honest Catholic Democrats with integrity to start holding CINO politician accountable at the primary level and mounting write-in protest votes. Yes it is a scandalous that many pro-infanticide people claim to be followers of Christ, it’s up to Christians to hold them to account.

Clearly, every Roman Catholic Clergyman who is aware of her stand and political position should deny this woman Communion. Why she has not been excommunicated from the Church is beyond me.
Even if she doesn’t violate the Canons personally, the support of a clearly anti-Roman Catholic position that could lead to the murder of innocents should earn her at least a stern rebuke from The Holy See. I think the fact that it hasn’t happened is a clear indictment of the Roman Catholic Church’s clergy in San Francisco, who are tolerant of her only because of her position. How would they treat the average woman on the street who held her positions?
They could, and should, do better by the Church.

Yes, Yes, Yes. The present situation clearly is confusing.
Catholics (yep, I’m one) are loathe the discipline anyone, for fear that they will leave the Church and take others with them. There is this belief at the the Diocesean level that forgiveness trumps all. Well, Christ’s forgiveness is indeed complete, but in these cases that’s not the issue.
If people are not disciplined, then they don’t know they are doing wrong and have no reason to change/amend their lives. If Nancy Pelosi was excommunicated for publicly holding positions, and working for them, that were contrary to Church teaching, she would then have an opportunity to make a choice between her elected position and her Church. Absent the need to make the choice, she just goes on living thinking she’s right.

It is my understanding that by creating this public scandal in supporting abortion Pelosi has excommunicated herself. However it is hard to get that message across when she is continuously allowed to approach the altar rail and receive the Eucharist. And for that I Catholic call shame on you to all the Bishops who left their spine somewhere on the side of the road.
All the pro life position papers mean squat if you do not once and for all make it clear that the tongues that praise the killing of the preborn should never, ever be allowed to corrupt the Body and Blood of Our Savior. Too many bishops are failing in their role of shepherd. Both by allowing the wolves in and more importantly allowing people to eat and drink condemnation to themselves. A primary duty of a bishop is the care of souls under his charge. By retreating from this debate they are abandoning the souls of many Catholics.
Also it must be remembered the goal of excommunication is for the person who is excommunicated to realize the seriousness of their sins and to repent so that they may return to a state of grace. If they remain obstinate they have only themselves to blame. But they would do well to remember, the fires of hell are no respecter of persons.

“How would they treat the average woman on the street who held her positions?”
The average woman on the street (pew) is actually treated better than Pelosi because they can send a check to NARAL without public criticism or notice from their clergy or other fellow pew-sitters. This is not to excuse Pelosi’s pro-murder votes, and I wish the bishops would be willing to hold pro-murder policitians to account in ways that they largely do not, but it is not true that Mary Catholic has it harder than her in that narrow respect.
Also, “the only solution is to elect more pro-abortion politicians” – who is that a quote from - FRC, Pelosi, or someone else? The article leads you to believe its Pelosi, which I suspect it isn’t. If she didn’t say that, then the American Family Association is lying, which is not the first time that organization has played fast and loose with the truth for purposes of a political agenda.

She is not Catholic; she and others may try to claim the name, but God knows the truth in their hearts. Her behavior demands that she is spiritually part of some other denomination (assuming she is Christian, that is not a foregone conclusion). Many will claim this is neanderthal gestapo adherence to old truths. No, it is belief in Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets (how quickly we forget the Feast of the Transfiguration on August 6!).
Jesus did not tell the woman caught in adultry, I forgive you and bless your sin. Jesus said I do not condemn you, go and sin no more.

Perhaps what the Catholics need are Indaba meetings and work on building relationships. Maybe Rowan Williams could lend Benedict XVI his script for Lambeth ‘08 and they could have a Vatican III?

Does anyone know if there is a Catholic group that is actively petitioning the Church to ex-communicate pro-abortion “Catholics”?
