Parish In Diocese Of Rio Grande Cuts Ties To National Church

Wednesday, October 29, 2008 • 12:03 pm

More of that itty, bitty, tiny minority in the news again.

A local Episcopal parish is cutting ties with the national church, and parishoners may now be in a fight to keep their property.

Parish leaders at St. Francis on the Hill in west El Paso say they plan on staying put and fighting to the end.

“We believe, and our lawyer agrees with us, that we have the right to say, ‘we quit and we’re not gonna send you any more money and we’re not gonna be affiliated with you’,” Ron Munden, a St. Francis vestry member, said.

Munden said it wasn’t just up to him—the entire St. Francis congregation voted and decided to leave the Episcopal Church of the U.S.A.

Rev. Felix Orji said given recent changes within the national church, it was an easy decision. “A lot of the bishops who are supposed to be teaching what the Bible teaches tell us Jesus is not God. He is just another ordinary human being,” he said.

Comments:

Is this partly a response to the story in the previous thread? Anyway - good for them.

I do hope that the ‘j’ in Reverend Felix’s surname is pronounced ‘h’, or that could be an unfortunate name in these circumstances.

Sorry - I got confused between ‘San Joaquin’ and ‘Rio Grande’. Is it an easy mistake to make?

Well, one (San Joaquin) is in California, the other in Texas. Maybe it helps if you can remember that the Rio Grande is a Texas river? The San Joaquin in a river in Calif., too, of course.grin

Thanks Oscewicee,

I’m expat English, and my knowledge of the finer points of US geography is not great - even if I am staying near Sna Franciso for the next few weeks.

Anyway - back to the topic…

A representative for the Episcopal Church of the U.S.A. gave ABC-7 this statement: “We are always saddened when one (parish) decides they would like to leave…But they will always be welcomed back and the porchlight is always on.”

It doesn’t seem like a very green thing to do.  But they’ll have to have the porch light on to celebrate Halloween.  After all it is a pagan holiday.

Good on ‘em! But I still say we need a thread that lists all the churches and churches in those diocese that have left! Such a list would befuttle the middle of the roaders and any who are drinking the kool-aid and believing that all is well and only a small minority have left. It’s time to put the facts into ink and on a list!

Fr Van:  The reverend’s surname isn’t Spanish.  It’s actually Nigerian.

LOL, Piedmont!  Now I’ll have that Marty Robbins tune bopping through my head all the way home tonight!  (It was the first “pop” song I learned to play on the piano, much to my parents’ chagrin, lo those many years ago.)  Heh.

Piedmont, I’m seconding that LOL! I must have played that song a thousand times back in the days when we didn’t have many records. wink (Records!)

10-12, nope.  Wrong side of town.  You can see the house I grew up in from there, however.
