Well it passed without dissent.

The Committee on Liturgy presented Resolution A095 updating the Church Calendar to commemorate Harriet Bedell, James Theodore Holly, Oscar Romero and the Martyrs of El Salvador, Tikhon, Vita Dutton Scudder, and Frances Joseph Gaudet. The resolution was passed without debate or dissent.

No dissent at all? What a shame!  I guess there are so few conservatives there that they really have to choose their battles.  (Bigger fish to fry, etc.)

Jill from what I’ve read the conservatives know they have lost everything and are just there to watch the show.

No this is not choosing their battles, it is a lack of fortitude.  Some on the list are worthy of remembrance, most are abominable.  Who we recognize as “lesser saints” says a great deal about who we are.  An atheist, lesbian, socialist, is now among the ranks of Anslem, Irenaus and Augustine.

Lord have mercy on us.

Perhaps since this was just the final vote to formalize something passed at GC06 (if I understand correctly) some of the new orthodox bishops (Love & Lawrence come to mind) may not have closely read the background?  I’m just speculating, but with 395 resolutions, and so much focus on B033 and the SSBs resolutions, perhaps this flew under the radar.  I believe the larger resolution re: the major revision of Lesser Feasts & Fasts (creating a new book “Holy Women, Holy Men”) is still pending, and has gotten some opposition in committee.

Anyway, these are guesses, I’m disappointed, but imagine that some bishops didn’t have this one on their radar at all.

Bishops should have this kind of thing on their radar.

How does “Let’s make some new saints!” slip off the radar?

Neither the 2006 or 2009 Blue Book contains a biographical sketch on Scudder, that I can find.  Bp Neil Alexander was the chair of the SCLM in 2006, and musician Julia Huttar Bailey is the current chair.  This commemoration by stealth involves several leaders.
It certainly gives new perspective to the desire for “listening.”
It also give new perspective on the proposed title Holy Women, Holy Men.  The new title coincides with the proposed commemoration of a lesbian.

Scudder wrote:

Bedell was a missionary to the Seminoles who did not work for their religious conversion.  Scudder’s Socialism and Bedell’s ministry of works, but not conversion, point to salvation by human effort, rather than the grace of God.  There is no doubt that they both performed many acts of charity in their lives.  However, the underlying assumptions of their worldviews make them unsuitable as liturgical exemplars of Christianity.

If the HoB has a parliamentary means to recall the motion, it should vote again.  The result may be the same, but at least it would be an informed vote.

No dissent?? HOB is utterly compromised, including the formerly vaunted “Windsor Bishops”.

What…?  And you don’t think Vicki Gene’s going to attain it within his lifetime if he gets his way?

#8, Jill. I see you fail to understand what modern Episcopal evangelism is about. The goal is promote the spread of social justice as seen by the Great White Parent and under no circumstances to convert the grateful recipients of your charity. If they convert they will abandon their quaint folkways and start attending your church.

Years ago in college I had several enlightening conversations with a priest named Zebedee Masereka about modern missionary work.

frreed and Athanasius Returns, I sincerely believe some of them do care, and care a great deal.  It was buried in a huge document and framed with insufficient information for recognition. 
Midwest Conservative Journal and StandFirm posted the story.  I wrote my bishop and deputation and drew their attention to the posts.  That’s what friends do—they point out landmines.  I wonder if anyone else wrote their bishop and deputation.
My own bishop was on sabbatical when I wrote him.  I don’t know if he didn’t read my email or if he disagreed with the significance of it.

Frankly Scarlet - I don’t give a hoot!  Abortionists are saints in their eyes.  Same sex unions are holy and blessed. Jesus in not the only way, but just one among several possibilities.  The Resurrection is a myth.  Get a grip folks and shake the dust from your sandals!  They have stolen the Church right out from under our noses and erected idols in the Lord’s Temple.  Do you really need further evidence of apostasy and heresy?
