I would imagine it is simply for their security guards that protect their buildings.
A spokesperson for the Department of Education says the guns are for use by officers with the agency’s Office of Inspector General. They have full federal law enforcement authority, and the IG’s office investigates “waste, fraud, abuse, and other criminal activity involving Federal education funds, programs, and operations. As such, OIG operates with full statutory law enforcement authority, which includes conducting search warrants, making arrests, and carrying firearms. The acquisition of these firearms is necessary to replace older and mechanically malfunctioning firearms, and in compliance with Federal procurement requirements.”

Fixed that for you.
We all know that a shotgun is the best way to stop a zombie.
Mike L, so what you are saying is that if a school Leave’s a Child Behind, they might have the Department of Education SWAT team knocking at their door? ![]()
It is simply amazing how many different armed federal law enforcement groups there are. NASA, for example, has its own police force.

My saintly wife would love to have one of those blunderbusses. She has parent/teacher conferences tonight.

Hmmmmm….how about that, suddenly people all over the US are finding the money to pay off their delinquent student loans…..
Maybe they’ll get the ones with the Bible verses in the sights.
I am not sure why a short barrel shot gun needs a sight.
I wonder under which article in the US Constitution one finds support for federal law enforcement authority.
If it would get my son to do his homework, I’m all for it.

Surely you are not suggesting that the US Constitution forbids the enforcement of federal law?
Iceworm: Actually, the “execution” of federal laws and the congressional “power to enforce” laws is mentioned repeatedly throughout the Constitution. You really should read the document before responding in such a knee-jerk fashion.
“Learn to read, or else?” :-}
Question: What’s more scary than a Zombie?
A Zombie with a doctorate in education.
Or, NEWSWEEK: http://www.newsweek.com/id/234590 .
I didn’t realize they were literalists at ED.
