As I have said over at T19,
“I appreciate anyone’s efforts at doing something. I don’t begrudge those happy dioceses that will have some greater connection and fellowship with these five Primates. And I don’t begrudge those bishops and clergy who will be able to get together at Gafcon.
Most of us in the average everyday dioceses—Alabama, Colorado, Mississippi, Southern Virginia, etc, etc,—will benefit from neither, but it is churlish to begrudge joy and fellowship to others just because it does nothing for oneself.”
Read the entire thing, from which the below is excerpted:
One important point of clarification is that, despite George Conger’s headline that the Presiding Bishop “backs” this plan, the bishops went to meet with the PB not to seek her permission, but to tell her what they were doing, that this did not violate the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church, and that they were going to be perfectly transparent with what this new association will be about and what it will do. . . .
. . . Unfortunately, while this move may help conservative bishops in conservative Dioceses hold on until (and if!) the covenant is created, this is not some big overall solution folks have been hoping for. Frankly, nothing so far has been that. Will something like that ever come? Maybe, maybe not.
It is good to hear they did not “ask permission” from the PB. I had noted that they presented the plan to
ABC and got his approval before showing it to PB.
Good end around with their backs covered, so to speak.
Perhaps more details about how the orthodox Bishops in TEC will create links with the Primates that have agreed to be part of the plan, and how
exactly the relationships will work, will create a
basis for orthodox laity approval. We shall see.
