A lesbian priest who's an associate professor at the University of North Dakota has written an open letter to Episcopal leaders after the state bishop refused her request for a license to minister.
The Reverend Gayle Baldwin says she wants to
Wait for it... wait for it...
start a dialogue.
Honey, let me save you some trouble: THE DIALOGUE STARTED A LONG TIME AGO.
Besides, you don't want dialogue. You want to get your way, that's all. Dialogue, after all, implies that once the matter has been sufficiently discussed, there is more than one acceptable answer to your request, one of which is "no." We all know that's not the case, so spare us the farce of claiming you want to "start a dialogue."
For his part, the bishop of North Dakota has made his answer plain:
North Dakota Episcopal Bishop Michael Smith says he's following a policy that stresses fidelity in marriage and abstinence for those not called to marriage.
This, of course, just won't work for Ms. Baldwin:
Baldwin says she was ordained long before she realized she identified herself as a lesbian. She said the bishop's refusal to [grant] her a license "needs to be challenged."
You don't say.
I have only one question for Ms. Baldwin: You're new at this, aren't you? Where's the emoting? Where's the talk of "justice"? Where's the lengthy description of the excruciating pain you suffer from this indignity? Holy Week, and you can't even muster a crucifixion metaphor?
Susan... what's going on? Are y'all slipping? This woman is obviously out of the loop!

I like that Greg points out that she doesn’t really want a dialogue:
My problem with the article is that it implies she is being denied a license to minister because of her sexual orientation, i.e., because she is a lesbian. However, the bishop is emphasizing that “he’s following a policy that stresses fidelity in marriage and abstinence for those not called to marriage.” So, something else must be going on here. Is it that she is sexually active or has told the bishop she would be if she found a willing partner?
