Welcome to Stand Firm!

Please Help Fund our Lambeth Coverage

Monday, July 14, 2008 • 9:37 am

Matt Kennedy and Sarah Hey are headed to Lambeth next week, and we need your help.

Contrary to popular accusations belief, we receive not one red cent from reclusive millionaires who move amongst the shadows of the Anglican right. If you know any of these reclusive millionaires, send them our way - we could use the jack.

No… Stand Firm is 100% reader-supported, and this Lambeth trip is costing us some serious coin. The total budget is about $16,000. Through careful savings of your donations since the New Orleans House of Bishops meeting last September, and solicitations from individuals on the Stand Firm board, we have managed to cover about $10,000 of this total.

We need to raise the additional $6,000 from the SF community, so I’ve set up a special fund in our PayPal account that is earmarked exclusively for Lambeth coverage. Every penny you donate through this fund will go towards covering our expenses for this trip - none of it goes toward the maintenance of our underground volcano lair, rotating secret bookshelf doors, or the vintage port section of our expansive, cave-like wine cellar. Matt Kennedy will receive a small extra ration of Powerbars, but that’s it.

If you would like to donate, just click this button and follow the simple directions. Stand Firm is a 501(c)(3) non-profit LLC incorporated in the state of Mississippi.

If you’d like to send us a check instead, our mailing address is:

Stand Firm

P.O. Box 13451

Jackson, MS 39236-3451

Please mark the memo field of your check as “Lambeth coverage.”

Okay, I’m in.  Wish I could afford more, but it should cover lunch in a pub while you drown your sorrows!

Thanks marney!

Make that two lunches, or a battery for the laptop. Like Marney, I wish I could do more.

For some strange reason PayPal thinks that my zip code and city are not a valid combination.  I’ve had this problem with a few other websites.  Apparently their database is incomplete.

[4] Posted by AndrewA on 07-14-2008 at 11:35 AM • top

AndrewA,

Try using the “home” zip code of your city. My neighborhood here in Jackson is 39202, but Jackson’s “home” zip code is 39201. That might help.

Is there any way to track the progress graphically in real time?

[6] Posted by Matthew A (formerly mousestalker) on 07-14-2008 at 11:59 AM • top

mousestalker,

In the interest of our early donors’ privacy, I’m going to wait until the amount gets up to the point where it’s not easy to figure out who’s given how much; but yes, I’ll be tracking the progress in a banner up top, hopefully very soon.

$50 is in the mail.  Wish I could do more.  I’m just a Howard Ahmanson wanna-be, as yet.

Can’t resist: The Upper SC diocese newspaper just came. The calendar on the back lists “Lamebeth Conference.” I hope Sarah and Matt find it to be different, but I’m very skeptical. I’ll try to wrestle with Paypal tomorrow.

I’m in. Ante up everyone. PayPal is easy, especially if you’ve ever bought anything on Ebay. Hurts less than a credit card.

Hi Greg,
I’m on Prince Edward Island and not using my home computer, but will be back in NH next week and will make a contribution.  It won’t be a lot, but if enough of us give a little, we can all make it a lot.

[14] Posted by no longer NH Episcopalian on 07-14-2008 at 01:35 PM • top

Hope that my contribution can help…  when I typed “Lambeth Support” into my on line banking profile… it shortened the comment so it looks like I just bought you guys a bottle of port!  You’ll probably need it!

Count me in.  It’s invaluable to have some accurate and very timely reporting.  I’ve also given a few quid to Kevin at Anglican TV since I love the stuff he does.

Count me in as well, I’ve made contributions to both AnglicanTV and BabyBlue. Just think of all the money we’ll save by not attending any further Lambeths. It’s almost like burning the mortgage.

What is the most dolphin-like way to ride a horse?  Inquiring marine biologists want to know.  Of course, Sarah has her bovine emission detector tuned up to maximum sensitivity these days, so maybe riding Jilleroo fashion is appropriate. wink

Sarah & Matt - I really hope you go!
Some things you should make sure to take with you -
Elizabeth Keaton will be there, she says so on her blog - be sure to congratulate her on her new doctorate in Pastoral Care and Counselling - she’s now the national President of the Episcopal Womens’ Caucus.  So have copies of her essay on feminism handy - the original version, of course, juicy bits underlined - can just be copied from StandFirm.  This will be more interesting since there’s also the personal angle involved - it’s and essay targeting Matt’s wife - and both Matt and Elizabeth will be there to field questions.  Do other churches, if they take the TEC route, want their womens’ organizations to be headed by someone who thinks that women with three children are in danger of drowning them, and that priests (even if living in different dioceses) have the obligation of reporting them to their bishops, and perhaps even have the moral responsibility of calling their local child services?  Very interesting given her position as president of the WEC
Also have this - http://www.episcopalchurch.org/documents/PB.Booklet.EnglishFinal.pdf - since KJS will be there - about her “resumé” - as well as Terry Ward’s article here.  Ward phoned her and she explained a little bit about the “Good Samaritan School of Theology” but she never explained why she described her position there as “Dean of the Good Samaritan School of Theology of Corvallis,” and it remains a puzzle to me why TEC has gone for so long not elucidating this.  It’s now reported on hundreds of sites, essentially virtually creating this school of theology ex nihilo.  Is the ex nihilo creation of prestigious positions within fictive institutions part of the new empowerment available with the baptismal covenant?  Are men allowed to do it too?  Is it purely for ecclesiastical use, or can the baptized also empower themselves this way when applying for secular positions?  Also interesting given her reputation for “big box thinking”, her position as PB and that this document got her there.
Maybe some pages from the Nevada diocese during her tenure there - e.g., why was she and her diocese so avid in promoting the teachings of Spong?  For the Clergy Conference of September 4-6 2003, which is required of clergy unless excused (from Diocesan Draft Customaries), Spong is the only figure mentioned, who would be present as “facilitator” - I suppose, the moderate voice to “channel” the others - see http://www.nvdiocese.org/FISHTALES/ARCHIVES/Tales03.05.html
Also, when the diocese opened its new Resource Center, in its November 20 2003 inaugural newsletter, the only question bringing up a particular author’s name brings up that of Spong - a rather “leading” question actually, to which it would be difficult to say “no” - seeing that it is a “popular topic”
“4. How important is it for the Resource Center to purchase new books on popular topics such as books by John Spong and others?”
http://www.nvdiocese.org/RESOURCES/RESOURCECENTER/NSLTRS/NSLTR03.12.pdf
Do Spong’s positions then reflect the “new thing” that’s happening in the American branch - just in case they don’t have his 12 theses and Williams’ response (1998, long before KJS’s tenure as bishop) - http://www.anglicantas.org.au/tasmaniananglican/200310-spong.html

sorry for the double post - but with Dr. Keaton’s essay on feminism be sure also to get the statements she put in her retractions, they are almost even juicier than the original article itself, and she will surely say, “oh I apologised and retracted those bits.”  The mcj has a nice bit on the retractions here - http://mcj.bloghorn.com/3222
“The other churches deserve to know what Episcopalian feminism is about”

We need Sarah and Matt at the “Lamebeth” Conference!  I’ve sent my small contribution to help the cause and wish it could be more.
I will remember them specially as I pray for the conference.
I wonder who is paying Gene Robinson’s way since he doesn’t have an official invitation to attend as Bishop of New Hampshire.

Don’t forget, Integrity raised $50K to fund their minions and dog & pony shows at Lambeth. SF’s meager budget pales by comparison but then, its agenda is also dull by comparison.

jmc, After reading this, I have to say it, this “Dr. Keaton” is a dangerously unstable person. Her original blog article reads like a threat, it’s stalking and harassment by a person who would exploit their power over. Clearly she is not a person who should be in a position of power. It also is a striking example that Dr. Keaton is filled with hatred, bitterness and intolerance to seek to slander as she has done. This is a precedent that should send chills down the spine of anyone.

Sarah:  With white gloves you would be entirely overdressed for meeting with a simple country bishop.

The link is stuck, all I get is a message that says “click to retry” which when clicked comes back to the same message.  Does this mean so many of us “demonic” Anglicans are trying to send money that the site is overloaded?

[52] Posted by tjmcmahon on 07-17-2008 at 11:41 AM • top

I am thrilled that they are going. Wish I had more money to send. Right now I am trying to raise money for The Dick Johnston Camp for the Children of the Incarcerated (I’ve been their Chaplain since the beginning and feel a drive to help financially), so at present my focus is elsewhere monetarily. Many of us need to start planning finacially to help with SF. Having said that, Their presence (wish Greg was going)at Lambeth is very important, and I hope they will kick a—and take names (in a loving and christian way of course). Please tell Bishop Benfield I am reading every word he writes and look forward TO TALKING WITH HIM ON HIS RETURN! smile

Firefox got through when explorer did not.  So my pittance has been added to the total.  Give my regards to “bishop” Chane.  On second thought, don’t.  That sort of language is probably not appropriate for polite company at Lambeth.

Have we allocated sufficient funds for curtsey lessions?

[55] Posted by Going Home on 07-17-2008 at 12:14 PM • top

Sarah, dear, do remember to pack your white gloves.  You never know when the Queen may make an appearance.

Of course, I was refering to HRH and not to the “simple, country bishop, VGR.  After all, he just wants to keep a low profile. So you wouldn’t want to spoil that by calling attention to his presence. Such notice would be a distraction.

[56] Posted by Summersnow on 07-17-2008 at 08:58 PM • top

OK, Matt and Sarah—-there you go! Others may have done it, too—-I don’t know; but I’ve donated the amount you need to make the $6,000 total.  So go with our blessings, post your inimitable posts, and keep up all back here on the edge of our seats waiting for what you will say next!

It was 12:07 AM, sorry.  “Keep us all back here on the edge of our seats . . .”

And in retrospect, I withdraw my statement that I “donated the amount you need . . .”.  I simply made a donation, like so many others. You are worth every penny you get, times many, many more!
