Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori Speaks Out About Gaza Attacks…leaves out a word or two

Tuesday, January 6, 2009 • 6:32 am

Here is the PB’s statement from December 29th:

Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori Speaks Out About Gaza Attacks

Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has issued the following concerning the current attacks on Gaza.

Yesterday afternoon in New York, outside the Episcopal Church Center, a demonstration took place in front of the Israeli consulate.  The demonstrators included orthodox Jews.  All were calling for an immediate end to the attacks in Gaza.  I join my voice to theirs and those of many others around the world, challenging the Israeli government to call a halt to this wholly disproportionate escalation of violence.  I challenge the Palestinian forces to end their rocket attacks on Israelis.  I further urge the United States government to use its influence to get these parties back to the negotiating table and end this senseless killing.  President-elect Obama needs to be part of this initiative, which demands his attention now and is likely to do so through his early months in office.  I urge a comprehensive response to these attacks.  Innocent lives are being lost throughout the land we all call Holy, and as Christians remember the coming of the Prince of Peace, we ache for the absence of peace in the land of his birth.

Immediate attention should focus on vital humanitarian assistance to the suffocating people of Gaza.  In March of this year, I spent a day in Gaza visiting religious and community leaders and the Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, run by the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem.  Since that visit, the situation, which was already devastating, has only worsened, with supplies of food, fuel, power, and medical supplies either cut off or indefinitely delayed.  Our hospital must now try to treat the wounded under the most impossible circumstances.

I ask all people of faith to join with the Episcopalians in Jerusalem who this Sunday dispensed with their usual worship services and spent their time in prayer for those who are the objects of this violence.  I pray for leaders who will seek a just peace for all in the Middle East, knowing that its achievement will only come when they have the courage to act boldly.  But they must do so now, before the violence escalates further.  It is only through a just and lasting peace that the hope of the ages can be fulfilled, that hope which we mark in the birth of a babe in Bethlehem.

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori
Presiding Bishop and Primate
The Episcopal Church

December 29, 2008

Here is her most recent statement:

We are deeply saddened by the first-hand reports we are receiving from Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza about the casualties they are treating under the most horrific circumstances.  Not only do they lack basic medical supplies, but with windows blown out they are even struggling to keep patients warm.  The high number of civilian deaths and injuries, which continue to include noncombatants, women, and children, will only prolong the violence years into the future.  Israel’s disproportionate response to the rockets being fired into its cities may well encourage violence beyond Gaza and Israel.  The first steps toward peace will only come if all parties unite behind an immediate ceasefire.  Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. reminded the world that “an eye for an eye soon leaves the whole world blind.”  May we seek to end this blinding violence.

There is an important name that the Presiding Bishop has, for some reason, decided to leave out of both of her public pronouncements. Chris Johnson nails it.

From here.

“Israeli forces have cut the main Gaza highway in several places, compartmentalizing the strip into the north, south and Gaza City itself and preventing movement between them. Israel also has taken over high-rise buildings in Gaza City and destroyed dozens of smuggling tunnels — Hamas’ main lifeline — along the Egyptian border.”

“U.N. humanitarian chief John Holmes said the overall Palestinian toll since the opening of the Gaza campaign on Dec. 27 stood at about 500, with about 125 of them civilians.”

On the link I provided above, when it opens you need to click on Fiction vs Fact in Gaza on the Tip Highlights panel on the right of the screen to get to the data.

It continues to boggle the mind how violence is “acceptable” to achieve the goals of fringe groups like Hamas, but not acceptable for those groups who oppose the fulfillment of those same goals. Is Israel supposed to just stand there and take it from a group bent on their destruction? WHEN does Israel get the “Green Light” from KJS and the rest of the wacky-left to DEFEND ITSELF. Sooner or later, one of those rockets is going to land in Jerusalem, and it won’t be TNT in the warhead. Then Katy will probably blame Israel for not doing more to protect the Holy Land… I say defend yourself from those who would destroy you. If someone came into your house, and proclaimed that their intent was to end your life, would you not use “disproportionate violence” to prevent your death? I know I would…

Word left out:  Hamas, rockets, responsibility.

Ruins her worldview like she ruins her Province.

Also words like: fail to maintain cease-fire (Hamas), genocidal terrorists, civilian shields, embedded armaments in schools and hospitals.

Actually, the most important word left out from this bishop is “Jesus.”  She can quote Ghandi (a Hindu) and another Christian, but not the founder of Christianity - Jesus.

I deplore the violence, but I deplore even more the violence that perpetrated Israel’s attacks.  It seems that the only way to protect Israel is to re-occupy the Gaza strip.

YBIC,
Phil Snyder

If she mentioned “Jesus” she might have to get into Hamas persecution and murder of Christians, or the fact that crucifixion is now a means of legal execution in Gaza for those like Christians who are deemed “enemies of Islam.”  She can’t have that, now, it would go against the Kumbaya theme of her message.

According to Pat Buchanin and many others, the answer is to attack the rocket launching sites, which can easily be identified by trajectoring the landing locations and the rocket’s range.  I would recommend that the Israeli’s LEVEL this area of Gaza but leave the rest of the country alone.  This would be proportionate response directed at military targets.

“Disproportionate Response”
So I guess a proportionate response would be to randomnly shoot rockets at innocent Paleestinians…
This woman is a theological nitwit and a lightweight when it comes to rational thought. This is just another example.

when they have the courage to act boldly.

So after sixty years of efforts to erradicate Israel, I guess it is time for listening, time of discernment, and if that doesn’t work get DBB to launch multiple suits to the targets.  Love her leadership style.  Just know the Israelis are learning for TEO

Buchanan’s idea is nonsense. The kind of rockets and mortars Hamas is using are “shoot-and-run” portables. For Israel to “level” the areas from which the shelling comes would do nothing more than make dirt bounce. Of course, given Buchanan’s well-known antipathy to Israel, it may be that an utterly ineffective response is the only kind he’d want them to make.

(#9)

Or, Hamas could launch their attacks from a site other than Gaza, assuming they are truly interested in preserving Palistinian civilians.

Or, if they are really intent on cashing in on their 99 virgins, they could set up shop directly within the sites of any Israeli unit, and launch their rockets.  No civilian casualties, and they get to go to “heaven”.  Everyone wins.

[13] Posted by Moot on 01-06-2009 at 11:58 AM • top

The problem is the rockets are intentionally launched from residential areas.  Mosques are used to store ammunition.  The most shocking was a video on the net yesterday that demonstrates how the Hamas terrorists use ambulances, complete with flashing lights and UN logos to move their terrorist fighters from place to place.  So the Israelis cannot tell which are real ambulances and which are vehicles used for transporting terrorists.

I’m with Deacon Phil on this.  The Soverign State of Israel not only has a right, but the moral obligation to defend herself and her citizens against naked aggression in the form of unguided missiles fired over her borders.
As to KJS and her position… Frankly, I’d have been gobsmacked if she had said anything different.

Actually, I believe the source of this quote is Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof.”

I just wonder which foreign policy credentials this woman has that leads her to believe she is qualified to comment publicly on affairs of state.

Roughly the equivalent credentials that inform her Christology.

Words left out:  Suicide bombings.  From 1994 -2005 hundreds of people in Israel were murdered on buses, in cafes and markets, etc by Hamas organized and inspired suicide bombers.  It is a brutal truth but at times we end up reaping what we sow.

I agree that Israel has a moral obligation to defend herself.  It is often very hard to do against terrorists, because they do not fight fair.  They will use “human shields” to their advantage, so Israel then takes it in the shorts with regard to the media and KJS.

Hey, I have a idea - how about the Gaza folks stop shooting rockets into Israel - I bet that would go a long way towards peace!  KJS - you might want to suggest that rather than condeming Israel for defending herself.

The statement is a target-rich environment, so I’ll confine myself to two things.  First, she calls on “Palestinian forces” to stop the rocket attacks.  This is ill-informed nonsense.  The attacks are being made by Hamas, which is a designated terrorist organization.  As I’m sure someone could have told her, the Palestinian Authority no longer has authority in Gaza thanks to an effective coup there against its authority.  Just because (some? most?) of the people in Hamas are Palestinian doesn’t make them “Palstinian forces” any more than the IRA are “Irish forces.”
President Abbas isn’t firing any rockets from the West Bank; Hamas is from Gaza.  Second, she calls on the President-Elect to basically get involved now.  Sure, she’s itching for January 20, but as Obama himself fully realizes, the country only has one President at a time.  He’s obviously being briefed and planning what he will do in two weeks, but he is both wise and correct not to make President Bush’s life more difficult right now.

She would have been better off just endorsing Bishop Suheil’s statement:

Name left out - Gene Robinson.
His inclusion would have made KJS’s pronouncement no less nonsensical.

Perhaps VGR could visit Hamas to initiate the brokering of a cease-fire. I’m sure he would be received exceedingly warmly.

From The Age to Come:
“Hear the words of the Master Carpenter, Jesus Christ of Nazareth:

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

Why are we all surprised? While once more,  I am appalled, KJS does have a history of jumping right in the middle of the wrong side of an arguement: UN vs the Bible, Gene vs Archbishop in waiting Robert Duncan, etc., etc..
Let’s just hope she doesn’t have Beers sue Israel and move Orthodox retired clergy and widow’s pensions to a HAMAS fund. Or sue Israel for the damages at the Episcopal Hospital.
I tell you again, we should be praying for her conversion and salvation as that is what the Father and His book, the Holy Bible tells us to do.
Lord have mercy.

“Deeply saddened” “Deeply saddened” “Deeply saddened”....repeat ad nauseum.

Can these blowhards invent another paragraph opening please?  Come on…it is getting hard to pay attention….or take ANYTHING they say seriously.

midwestnorwegian,

Yes “deeply saddened” seems to be some sort of mantra.  I wonder, though, how much the rest of the world (Hamas, Palestine, Israel, etc.) really give’s a rodent’s bottom that she (or anyone else in this tiny, almost infintesimal denomination) is “deeply saddened”.  Doesn’t it seem awfully…what’s the word…self-aggrandizing?...to think that other people really care about how she feels ?

England once faced the same dilemna. The Germans were launching V1 and V2 rockets willy-Nilly against England and were particularly trying to hit the large civilian population of London.  What was the reaction of the English and their American allies? Well, they wiped Dresden, Germany off the map for one thing among many others. Eventually, the Allies won an unconditional surrender of the Germans.
If Katherine Jefforts Schori had made similar statements in that era, they would have tried her for treason and thrown her in a dark, cold jail cell (if not worse).

#30, athan-asi-us, you are so right!  And many of the people who make “hate statements” about President Bush and the war would have been tried for treason, too, if they had said the same things about the president or the war in the WWII era.  My how times have changed.

“Deeply Saddened” is to the 21st century what “Deeply Grieved” was to the 1970’s.  It was applied to the
*tragedy* of women being denied ordination. We can all be deeply grieved it didn’t continue.
