Welcome to Stand Firm!

Stand Firm Meet-Up in Bedford

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 • 8:34 am

Several people have emailed and PM’d wondering if some of the Stand Firm regulars might get together in Bedford during the ACNA assembly meeting. I’ve talked with the event organizers and with longtime commenter Steve Lake, who has volunteered to be the point man for this get-together. Here’s what we have, and what we need:

- The best time for the meet-up will be Tuesday, June 23rd. There is a 3-hour break beginning at 4:30.

- The ACNA nametags you’ll get when you register at the event are the kind that slip into a little plastic sleeve. I’ve gotten permission from the event organizers to suggest that if you want to, you can write “SF:” followed by your screen name somewhere on your tag. This should be a great little ice-breaker at the meet-up and during the rest of the week.

- My assumption is that the parish hall and other meeting spaces there at St. Vincent’s will not just be sitting there empty during the Tuesday evening break (the schedule is pretty tight and there’s a lot going on all week). Therefore, the question of exactly where to meet is still up in the air. We don’t want to create a check-hassle scene at a restaurant that usually goes along with a lot of people getting together, but that doesn’t completely rule out a restaurant. What I’m hoping is that some of Iker’s boys reading this can come up with some ideas on where the meet-up can take place.

- Finally, if you want to attend, or if you have ideas on locations, or if you want to volunteer to help Steve, please send him a private message. If you don’t know how the PM system works, instructions are here. It’s just like sending an email.

If you’d like to post ideas or suggestions here, feel free, but please don’t post your RSVP here - send that to Steve via private message.

While I am not going to the ACNA convention, I would be interested in driving to Bedford to meet some of the SFers.

There are a couple of sports bar/grill type places located on airport freeway in the mid cities.  Those could be possible if folks were interested in having a beer or something.  Or…...you could pack it up and come over to the Fort for some BBQ at Angelos…..REALLY COLD BEER and pretty decent sandwiches.  The nice thing is you pay at the time you order so you wouldn’t have check splitting chaos.

I assume that there’ll be some photo ops with IDs here, so that those of us who can’t be there can have some idea of whom we’ve been chatting with for all these months.

Great idea, Cennydd!

I’d enjoy meeting and BBQ sounds good.  I also want to attend the Nashotah House reception.  I’ll send Dean Munday an email and find out the details.

Just got a note from Director of Development at Nashotah House.  Their reception is on Monday 5:30-7:30

#2, is Angelos within walking distance of St. Vincent’s?  I don’t gather it is.  If any one familiar with FW could recommend a place like it, where you order individually, AND within walking distance, I think that would be ideal.  I would be glad to call ahead and reserve tables for the confirmed guests.

So please, sound off Fort Worth!

FYI, Trinity is also sponsoring a dinner at 5:30 p.m. on the 23rd.

I am sure that there will be plenty of photo ops. If the Provincial Assembly is anything like an AMiA Winter Conference, as Bishop Duncan say it’ll be, it’ll be one big photo op. I’m sure pictures of the meeting will be posted all over the Internet. Have a great time. The folks in Texas know how to party. But watch out for the hangover afterwards.

Steve,
I don’t the Bedford area very well and I have only been to the Cathedral a couple of times. There didn’t seem be anything within walking distance. You pretty much have to drive but I will make some inquiries of what is close by.

#10 There is a Luby’s and Tex-Mex restaurant down the street(Forest Ridge) on the hwy access road.  But if you’re willing to drive about 5 minutes west there is NorthEast Mall with LOTS of restaurants close by…or the Murphy and 157 exits 5 minutes to the east have several restaurants…the Cathedral is only about 1 1/2 minutes off the hwy…you can see the bell-tower for miles.

If anyone from St. Vincent’s happens by this thread, could you please send me an e-mail/private message or else contact Greg?  Thanks!

If you want to eat Angelo’s or Railhead Barbeque, you might consider pre-ordering and bringing it in. Both places are worth it.

But all this food talk begs the question: Greg, will you or Matt or Sarah be there?

jim1,

Thanks for the note - I’ve removed references to the NH reception from the main post.

I’m a member of St. Vincent’s.  The church is just about 3 blocks off the freeway.  There is a Luby’s Cafeteria on the sw corner of the freeway and Forest Ridge, Posado’s (tex-mex) on the ne corner and Spring Creek on the nw corner.  There’s also a Fuddrucker’s (hamburgers) on the south service road, just east of Forest Ridge.  There’s Cheddar’s and Buffalo Wild Wing’s on the north service road, between Forest Ridge and Central.
East of the church in the vicinity of the freeway and Central Drive is a Jason’s Deli, Lupita’s (tex-mex), Boomerjack’s Grill, Dukes Original Roadhouse, Chili’s, Razzoo’s, and On the Border.
Lot’s of choices but you’ll need a car to get to most of them.

I’ve also been in contact with Steve Lake and we are looking into space at the Cathedral which would be the easiest for all considering those without transportation.

Recommendation:  if you go to a restaurant, I would suggest one without loud music, so attendees can hear each other, or use a restaurant with a private room where the music can be turned down or off.

Been there, done that with loud music in the background and couldn´t hear myself, much less my dinner partners.  Very frustrating!  Some of the suggested restaurants wouldn´t likely be helpful for talking and sharing.

Some of us are in the bedford area but will not be attending the Conference. We’d like to join in if possible

[17] Posted by bob+ on 06-10-2009 at 01:06 PM • top

#17 Bob+, absolutely!  All are welcome.  Come one, come all, whether you are attending the Assembly meetings or not.

[18] Posted by Steve Lake+ on 06-10-2009 at 01:28 PM • top

I it possible that those attending could tell Steve if we will have a car, and maybe a couple of people from the area could meet us at 4:30 at the Cathederal and we could carpool to dinner?

Out of Verger’s list, I would recommend Luby’s.  It is a cafeteria so everyone could easily get their own check.  The two Luby’s in Fort Worth both have rooms that can be reserved and made private for functions.  I never paid a fee for the room (but that was in the past, things can change).  Plus, they don’t have loud noise, just deaf seniors yelling at each other.

[19] Posted by Shelley in Delaware on 06-10-2009 at 01:38 PM • top

From the list of restaurants I mentioned earlier, there are only two of them that I’m aware of having a room that can be reserved - Spring Creek and Fuddrucker’s.
I don’t believe this Luby’s has a private room - at least I’ve never seen it.

I also will be happy to help in any way that I can once I return to Bedford from Israel. If the large room on the second floor of the SVS middle school isn’t in use at that time (I don’t know) it might be a good spot. I could hold 90+ without incident. Still, I think Lupe’s or Spring Creek BBQ would probably work as well (three blocks from SV Cathedral Church and School).

Isn’t there an Abuelos nearby?  I remember seeing one along the highway somewhere in the HEB area.  I thought it was in Bedford.

Abuelos is in Hurst, at the Precinct Line exit, a few miles West of SV.

I’m in but without transport. Great idea

[24] Posted by ammakate on 06-10-2009 at 04:09 PM • top

I will be attending the Provincial Assembly, but I am also attending the Trinity Dinner…So I would be available to meet other Stand Firmers from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM and I would indeed love to put faces with the screen names!!!

Grace and Peace!

#23 Matt Abueloes is great mexican food. But to me is too noisey for a meet and greet.

Greg or Steve,
I think you have my email.  Contact me.  The idea of using the upstairs of the m.s. might work but if people don’t register they can’t get onto the property and parking is going to be tough.  We are shuttling people from a nearby stadium parking lot.  I would suggest one of the places verger mentioned nearby.  If you pick the place and set a time, people can make there way there whether they are attending or not.  There are a couple places that have private rooms but that will take someone coordinating.  If you want some help, get in touch with me through the st vincents cathedral website.

Ryan,

Thanks for the offer. Steve just emailed to say a location may have opened up for which he was waiting on confirmation, but he also said he was signing off for the night so I don’t have any further info. One of us will be in touch, though.

I’d love to come over from the Allen area.  I’ll sit tight and see how the event develops.
Another idea is for folks on the east side of the metroplex to combine the service at Christ Church in Plano on the 24th with a meet-up…?

[29] Posted by Cindy T. in TX on 06-10-2009 at 08:16 PM • top

I would not worry about transport. Once the details are figured out, we can figure out the transport issue as well.
Thanks Steve for organizing this.

I, too, am interested and would likely make a meet up.  And I, too, advise avoiding loud restaurants.

(One time a high school reunion met at a loud jazz restaurant.  Terrible idea.)

Is someone going to post the meeting place, time, etc. for those not attending the ACNA meeting? Or should we contact Steve?  George

[33] Posted by george on 06-12-2009 at 11:28 AM • top

I’m sure Steve will post it once he as completed all of the plans.

[34] Posted by Verger on 06-12-2009 at 11:35 AM • top

It would be courteous if you think you are interested in attending the gathering for you to send Steve a PM (private message) so that he can plan accordingly.  A table for 10 and a table for 30 is a big difference in the eyes of the restaurateur who has to set it up.

[35] Posted by Shelley in Delaware on 06-12-2009 at 01:26 PM • top

Greg,

May a liberal sort who wont be attending make a suggestion?

Pick a person with local knowledge, announce it and a time.  Pick a spot for car pooling and announce it.  Otherwise, trust me this is painful experience with leftie activists, you will never get it done.  Be aware that no matter what you pick, when you pick or who you ask to coordinate, someone will complain.

You all may not be left wing, but you sure nuff sound like us trying to find a bar.  wink  Maybe it is just human?

Dean Munday shared this news regarding the Nashotah House Gathering on Monday.

Nashotah House is hosting a reception for the entire Assembly in the parish hall at St. Vincent’s during the dinner break on Monday evening.  Please come—and spread the word.

[37] Posted by Ed McNeill on 06-12-2009 at 03:24 PM • top

I would hope that most of you would come to the Nashotah House reception on-site and spend some time with each other there.

If the group meets at the cathedral, why not order in? Lots of BBQ places will cater for big groups with little fuss or great expense.

Problem meeting at St. Vincents is it would exclude any of us who are not going to be at the meetings. I’d like to meet up with everyone but I’d think that means off site.
