More on the New Archbishop of the Scottish Episcopal Church

Tuesday, June 30, 2009 • 9:30 am

Oh joy—the newly elected Archbishop of Scotland has been in the US for part of May . . . doing media training and networking with other TEC bishops.

From his blog:

I’m here in North Carolina at what they call the Residency for the College of Bishops of The Episcopal Church. That means all the bishops elected during the last three years. This week is the center of the program - each of us has a ‘coaching bishop’ with whom we have a commitment to work throughout the year. In my case, that is a Skype-driven relationship with Bishop Philip Duncan of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast.

So why do this? Two reasons .. the training is excellent. And it’s a chance to build relationships with bishops in The Episcopal Church at a critical and fascinating time. I’m enjoying it.

Yes indeed—he’s learning a lot from the experts . . . on conflict, and the media, and on “Overcoming Organisational Defences.”

Meanwhile it was a day on ‘Overcoming Organisational Defences’ and an exploration of how we deal with conflict. Tomorrow a full day of high quality media training.

And of course, the continuing need for simultaneous translation ..

Hot Button Issues - self-evident

Push Back - as in ‘I’ll give you a bit of push back on that’ - meaning ’some space to adjust so that you feel more comfortable

Take-away - what I learned from this

I’ve always loved the American language. I used to be on the e mail network of the Bay Area Tandem Club - so that I could follow in spirit at least their expeditions to Sonoma and Sausalito. Their Sunday morning run - for which I was unavailable - was always a ‘Show and Go’

And then of course the networking .. which is unsurpassed.

Well….his future doesn’t look very bright in light of this training with TEc bishops. Maybe he will have a revelation in the middle of it and see the Light. I will pray for such.

Well, since he’s in North Carolina, perhaps he can ask how to best go about erasing all signs of a child-pimping vestry member?

I would think that he is right at home as the Scottish church mirrors TEC.

Would have made more sense for him to have sojourned in the Church of Nigeria, where the average diocese is about the size of his Province.

Oops, no offense intended toward the Church of Nigeria in my last.  I should have said, “...Church of Nigeria, where the ASA of the average diocese is about equal to the baptized membership of his entire Province.”

Point of information but he us the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, and we haven’t had a decent one since +George Argyll and the Isles in what seems like eons ago.

The Primus has even less physical power than PB as they are only Primus inter pares.

No such luck, NB&S #2.  His blog says he’s at 3000 feet, which means he’s in the mountains, in the Diocese of Western North Carolina.

Yes, almost certainly he’s at Kanuga, that marvelous conference center near Hendersonville (not far from Asheville).

Actually, I think the idea of having a personal coach in ministry is a great one.  Every priest or deacon, and especially every church planter, ought to bave such a mentor figure.

In fact, I’d say the training school for new bishops is actually one of the better things that TEC has been doing to strengthen the ministry of bishops.  I believe that +Clay Matthews is normally in charge of it, and he’s very capable at that practical training aspect, even though, alas, he’s totally bought into the “gay is OK” lie.

Yesiree, nothing like practical “hands on” training for new bishops in the “gay is OK” arena of TEC ministry.  They’re going to need it going to need it.

Sorry, Fr Handy, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity…..
