BREAKING AGAIN: Shell of Archbishop Akinola Collapses, Disappears in Puff of Smoke
Friday, August 24, 2007 • 2:16 pm
Astonished cathedral attenders today watched in horror as a choir member accidentally brushed Archbishop Akinola’s robes during the processional—and the Archbishop disappeared amidst a sudden collapse of robes and mitre.
“It was as if a facade had collapsed,” said one Nigerian worshipper. “He simply melted into the earth, and a wisp of smoke appeared.”
The event occurred during an Evensong service at the Cathedral. Observers stated that the robes appeared to have been a mere shell, with no actual person inhabiting the garments. Diocesan officials are waiting on the Chancellor’s reading of the canons to know what steps are in order.
When asked for comment, a spokesperson for the Archbishop of Canterbury stated that the “happenstance” should not change the number of reserved hotel rooms for the Lambeth Meeting in 2008.
