A Resolution Submitted by Bishop Dean E. Wolfe, Diocese of Kansas

Thursday, September 20, 2007 • 11:22 pm

Resolved; the House of Bishop of the Episcopal Church meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, in September, 2007

We, the House of BIshops of The Episcopal Church, express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to our guests, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and members of the Joint Standing Committee of the Anglican Consultative Council and the Primates.  Their presence is a living reminder of the unity that is Christ’s promised gift in the power of the Holy Spirit.  Our shared experience of study, dialogue, and prayer strengthens our passionate commitment to remain partners in the councils of the Anglican Communion and loving brothers and sisters in Christ.

We are grateful for the warm and generous hospitality shown to us by our brothers and sisters here on the Gulf Coast.  We are deeply moved by their faith and courage shown in the face of Hurricane Katrina’s merciless destruction.  We find hope in the generous response shown by people from around the world to their needs and we commit ourselves to work towards a renewed community where the greatest needs are met first and the strongest care for the weak.

As bishops laboring in a fractured age, we seek to find a place for everyone at Christ’s table.  We believe room for respectful disagreement within our church is holy space and we value opportunities for ongoing conversation, prayer, and growth.  While we acknowledge that we are not of one mind, we continue to strive to be of one heart.  We are resolute in our belief that, “the mission of the Church is to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ.”

We pledge ourselves to work more fervently for deeper unity in the Church and we commit ourselves to addressing the pastoral needs and concerns of everyone in our care.  We are pleased to note a growing awareness and understanding of the polity of The Episcopal Church, both within the membership of our own church and with our Anglican partners in other Provinces, even as we gain a deeper awareness and understanding of the polity of other Provinces.  We affirm our understanding that The General Convention, that wondrous gathering of lay and ordained person, is authoritative for our Province.

While we have been saddened and challenged by the growing number of episcopal acts exercised by bishops from outside our province, we are grateful that most of us in the House of BIshops are involved in healthy partnerships with various ministries and companion dioceses throughout the Anglican Communion.  It is in these complex relationships that we are continually reminded of our on-going commitment to Christian mission and outreach and desire to know Christ and to make Christ known.

We humbly ask that the Lord who gives us the will to pursue these good works will grant us the strength to accomplish them.

submitted by Dean E. Wolfe, Ninth Bishop The Diocese of Kansas

This says nothing at all…not even subtly. What’s the point?

I see four talking points here: 1) full inclusion of practicing homosexuals, 2) never ending listening process, 3) Episcopal Polity did it and 4) we have the money you need.

We Support Full Inclusion of Unrepentant Sinners: “find a place for everyone at Christ’s table.”

We Will Never Stop the Listening Process: “we value opportunities for ongoing conversation”

The Buck Doesn’t Stop with the Bishops: “We are pleased to note a growing awareness and understanding of the polity of The Episcopal Church ...The General Convention, that wondrous gathering of lay and ordained person, is authoritative for our Province.”

But Cross Us and the Bucks Stop Here: “most of us in the House of Bishops are involved in healthy partnerships with various ministries and companion dioceses throughout the Anglican Communion ... complex relationships that we are continually reminded of our on-going commitment to Christian mission and outreach and desire to know Christ and to make Christ known….We humbly ask that the Lord who gives us the will to pursue these good works will grant us the strength to accomplish them.”

Is there a prize for the bishop who includes the most buzz words in a resolution (i.e. “polity,” “live more deeply,” “affirm our understanding of General Convention,”) without acutally saying anything?  If so, I nominate this guy, at least at this point. I’m pretty sure he’ll have some competition and I’ve only read this and +Lee’s so far.

Ann McCarthy and Rocks,
Remember “within the bounds of our common life.”
I think it would be a mistake to assume he is not “saying anything”.
One can think at the time it is a meaningless resolution and find out later it is used to promote a particular agenda.

Well, THERE’S a quaint official non-response to DeS, combined with a very nicely put, “I’m rubber, you’re glue…”

Have you seen that commercial for (I think IBM) where the employees hand out bingo style cards with the known buzz words just before some boss type begins a presentation. It makes me laugh every time the young woman says BINGO. Have cards been prepared? Are we ready to play when the final Mind of the House is presented?

Deja Vu,
You’re right, he’s saying something, the problem being that it is not easily understood and you only find our later what he meant was not what you understood him to mean.  He’s writing in free verse so that it can mean all things to all people.  I have a desperate desire to have them do as Kendall Harmon was saying earlier - let their yes actually be yes and their no be no.

A commenter on another thread has clearly labeled the lifeboat in which our HOB has put themselves.  By their constant deferral to General Convention as the source of unity and the definer of doctrine, they no longer adhere to the Lambeth Quadrilateral: this can no longer claim to the “The Historic Episcopate,” not when matters of faith are kicked upstairs to some higher episcope.

Katie,

You are funny!

I call “Bingo” from +Wolfe’s words, alone….

As I work my way up this list of resolutions I will try mightily to abstain from overuse of digestive endproduct metaphors for the ones so richly deserving such labels.  This one classifies as a paper product intended to smooth over the privy door to make it appear to be an upscale - nearly indoor (It’s only two humdred feet from the house!) - accomodation.

Doesn’t work.
