Is the Communion service with the ABC & gay clergy with spouses to take place?

Friday, November 23, 2007 • 6:59 pm

Back in September, Ruth Gledhill reported about what was supposed to be a “secret” communion that Archbishop Rowan Williams was to celebrate with “The Consultation”—a “support group” for gay clergy and seminarians and their partners—in St Peter’s, Eaton Square on November 29.

But there is this cryptic communication from the Bishop of London/London Diocesan Synod: “I understand that no such meeting will take place at St Peter Eaton Square.”

Now . . . in ECUSAland, what that would actually mean is that the eucharist is taking place next door to St Peter’s Eaton Square.  Or the following day—you know, November 30, rather than November 29.  Or that it has already taken place in an underground bunker.

Over here, we call such forms of speech “Bruno Beguilements” as in “it does not happen in my diocese with my permission.

But I don’t know how the Church of England works.

Can somebody help?

They are still going to do it, but they are looking for a large enough closet.

aaah yes, allow me to translate for all my linguistically-challenged and turkey-stupefied American cousins.

I would understand this as +London saying “I have agreed with St Peter Eaton Square that it will not happen”.

Let the reader understand.

As the PM said in House Of Cards, “you may very well think that; I couldn’t possibly comment.”

Thanks, David.  American terminology has become so malleable, an updated version of Irenaeus’s Revisionist Dictionary will soon be needed on this side of the Atlantic—Bruno’s beguilements, Ian Douglas’s new understanding of ‘division,’ perhaps even a new section using Lord of the Rings imagery (like Wormtongue).

London Bishop speak with forked tongue.

We are used to parsing by politicians and civil servants in the UK but I would be shocked if this were the case with a bishop of the standing of +London.  I therefore have no reason to doubt that his reply is full and frank.

I am quite uncertain that what you thought I said was not what I thought I meant. Lah-de-doo-dah.

David Ould, I’m sorry to still seek clarification but are you saying the Bishop of London has stopped the ABC from celebrating?
Really?
Sorry to be so sceptical but, if that is what you are implying, I don’t believe it will be the end of it.

“Answer from Bishop of London.  I understand that no such meeting will take place at St Peter Eaton Square”.

Oh, ok, so where will it take place?

In Rowan’s basement at midnight tomorrow.  Spread the word.

I doubt it. I suspect he’s telling us that he’s had a conversation with the staff at St Peters and told them that it won’t be happening there.

Oh my, such a shame that the big event will be in secret at a secret place at a secret time.  I had hoped that it would be announced on ESPN so my NASCAR friends in England could go down there and participate.  Looks like anyone who depends on the ABC will always be having to go back into the closet.  Shame!
