More on the New Design: Let’s Talk Mobi

One of the most common requests lately has been for a mobile-friendly version of Stand Firm, so let me know:

- What kind of device do you use? (iPhone, Blackberry, etc.)

- How would you characterize your device's connection speed?

- Do graphics trip up your device?

- Do videos trip up your device?

- Do you often read entire articles or post comments using your device, or are you just looking for headlines and excerpts?

Comments:

I use an iPhone using ATT’s Edge network (or available wifi).  Graphics are fine.  Videos don’t “trip up”, but flash doesn’t play.

I often read entire articles, but rarely post.
love the new format and the link page!  Well done.

Let’s talk “Mobi"—as in Mobi Dick?

Seriously, I am looking forward to buying a PDA of some sort (with my Verizon 2-year rebate) with a view to consolidating my web- and phone- based address books and calendars. I would hope to do as many blog functions as possible from the mobile device, but as a yet-to-be actual user, am not well-enough informed to know what is feasible.

It would seem useful if someone who has a blackberry, iphone, etc., could comment on how useful the mobile-friendly page in T19 has been for them.

Richard. (my middle name)

standfirm doesn’t do horrible on my moto q...it’s a pain to scroll through all the comments though…

i use sprint, whose new data network is pretty fantastic, generally. i’d love to see a standfirm mobile.

Posted by micahtowery on 03-27-2008 at 11:36 AM

p.s. on my moto q, java/flash, etc. don’t work typically. i am able to use videos through a program i found, but i have to search for them separately (i.e., can’t stream from just any website i access). easiest thing for me is keeping it simple: text, standfirm logo, maybe a text ad/link, if you need to…

a good site to check out is see the way drudge formatted his columned site (similar to sf) to mobi, via http://www.idrudgereport.com ...

p.p.s. a discussion on moby dick is, perhaps, just what sf needs.

1.  Blackberry 8830
2.  Connection speed is medium/high.
3.  Graphics significantly slow down my download(s).  When I’m on my BB, I’d like the option of viewing a pic or not.  Usually I’m looking for news, not for pics.
4.  Ditto w/video.
5.  I read entire articles but don’t post from my BB.  Would love to see headlines and then choose whether or not to click on the link.
Love the new site, but I still have to wear sunglasses.  Wouldn’t mind it a shade more off-white.

Posted by veritas2007 on 03-27-2008 at 11:44 AM

Crackberry 8830 too.  Would prefer to see headlines first rather than comments if possible.  A cut-down version for mobile access would be the best of course!

Blackberry browser and Razr browser.  Pretty speedy, but extensive graphics slow things to a crawl (a few don’t make a difference).  Video worse.

Keep it simple: main page with “the week” and links to “features,” “recent comments,” and “around the web.” Keep graphics to a minimum, perhaps the SF logo and not much more.

Read entire articles, but don’t need to see but a brief bit to decide whether to read the whole thing.

Posted by RomeAnglican on 03-27-2008 at 11:59 AM

1. ATT 8525 running WinMoble 6
2. Default connection is 3G (3.6 Mb/s) but I use a program (BandSwitch)to switch to EDGE as 3G will eat a battery in no time.
3. Graphics are generally not a problem, and, if they are, I hot-switch to 3G.  3G will stream live video with no problems, but EDGE continually buffers.
4. Since the redesign, I can View at either Fit To Screen or One Column (Desktop, of course, requires scrolling)
5. The seriffed type face used under the SF Logo is almost unreadable; the sans serifed faces are fine.
6. I do read entire articles, but, if in One Column mode, must scroll.
7. Headlines would be useful.
8. The white background uses a good deal more battery power than the previous black background.
9. The Icons are useful, but unreadable, and, of course, no flyout.  They do wrap in Portrait Mode, but not in Landscape.
10. All in all, an excellent job.

OK - anyone who would like to, please check out this link on your wireless device and let’s talk about how to refine it:

http://www.standfirminfaith.com/index.php/site/mobi

PLEASE NOTE that the links do not work at the moment. Once we settle on something for the home page, we’ll move on to the individual entry page.

Posted by Greg Griffith on 03-27-2008 at 12:24 PM

Greg, on my Blackberry this comes across with huge print--only about four to six words per line, about seven lines per screen.

Posted by RomeAnglican on 03-27-2008 at 12:35 PM

One the 8525, the “white” text is marginally readable, but the magenta headline (after linking) is unreadable. The blue headline is OK, but lighter would be better. The background on my 8525 appears to be about 70-80% black, and on the desktop screen is much lighter, maybe 30-40%.

Posted by leonL on 03-27-2008 at 12:54 PM

Yep.  That works great for me.  Background could be a tad lighter.  Oh, and could you move that sofa about an inch to the right?  smile

- I use a Blackberry on AT&T;’s EDGE network.
- Download speed is fine for text
- Downloading graphics slow it down
- I’ve never tried video.
- Almost always reading articles and not posting comments

Agreed w/ Peter [6] about the placement of the recent comments. Moving the Around the Web section made a difference, shifting the recent comments away from the top of the page would finish the job.

Thanks for asking about this and making SF easier to use!!

Is the logo image causing anyone’s device to display a horizontal scroll bar?

Site looks great on iPhone!  Linked via link on comment #9.

I use a Samsung Blackjack.  I read StandFirm in bed at about 5:00 in the morning.  I do like the new setup.  At the church I use a regular Dell computer.

iPhone

There is no substitute.

And on the eighth (and ninth and tenth) days, God created Steve Jobs ego; and He saw that it was good.  Maybe.

I have a Palm TX.  It has medium speed, and does not do videos.  Titus 1:9 has a “headlines only” for mobile viewing, and I like that.  Since you have moved the “Around the Web” section, getting to the articles is much simpler.

I have made comments from my Palm once or twice.  It worked fine - and after I get a keyboard for it, it will be a piece of cake.

Greg, It seems that a poll of those who have time to use mobile devises will show that it is a minority of readership.  This week I have found it frustrating to visit with all the changes in format, and now more that will only serve a few… The logo and format have me using a horizontal scroll bar on my P.C.!  Maybe because I use side bar for bookmarks, weather etc… but I really don’t want to have to reformat my screen when I visit SF, which until this week I did several times a day.  The new format is harder to descern as far as topics and threads, the old may have been harsh but the eye was able to pick out what had changed and what was being discussed.  I really don’t mind change, but am still trying to work this one out.

Posted by Loose Canon on 03-28-2008 at 07:31 AM

I use both mobile and PC platforms running XP SE home edition and Windows Mobile 3 SE on IPAQs.  1.  I recently posted a comment on the +Schori thread.  It would have been #101.  It did post on the recent posts area, but did not show up in the actual comments area.  Are you having an issue when comments excede 100? ..I posted from my IPAQ over wifi.  As a frequent mobile user, I find the new organization less easy to use but that maybe just me.  But on both platforms, I find it too bright.

BlackBerry Pearl on at&t;’s slow-generation EDGE network.

Looks great!.  The logo looks good and doesn’t cause a scroll bar in either the BlackBerry browser or Opera Mini.  The page takes about 20 seconds to load into Opera.

About the only time I would use this is if something big is happening and I’m away from a computer, or I’m stuck in one of those meetings where I look for any type of distraction.  You know the kind where you email someone in the office to come over and pull you out for some “emergency”?

I have no problems at all with the new look....works fine for me!

Um...Loose Cannon?  re: “Greg, It seems that a poll of those who have time to use mobile devises will show that it is a minority of readership.” Let me welcome you to 2008. smile Not all people use a “mobile device” like a Blackberry or Treo (and the ones who do find them indispensable for work, so it’s not a matter of “finding time”,) but plenty of people use cell phones with internet access and can log on to the internet using them.

Oh, and for those iPhone lovers out there?  The Sprint Touch is a better phone.  Check out the reviews. wink

Prototype site looks great on my Palm Treo 700W

Posted by Allan Bourdius on 03-28-2008 at 03:56 PM

My Palm picks things up well—but the icons at the top of the articles are very small on its screen, and it took me a while to figure out which one would give me headlines.  But I guess I will learn quickly enough.

Posted by AnglicanXn on 03-28-2008 at 09:05 PM

On the other hand, in “mobile view” on my Palm TX, clicking on a headline does not take me directly to the article and its comments—it just redirects me back to the start of the Standfirm page.  I had to try clicking on the headline twice before it took me to the article, and I had to wade through all the comment summaries, who is signed in, etc, to get back to the icons for around hte web, headline view, etc.  T1:9 takes me directly to the article from the headline, so it it possible…

iphone—works great.

AT&T;3125
Looks much better. Graphics OK, video is a no-go.
With the smallish screen, I switch to a one-column display, which makes things readable, but increases the amount of scrolling. The new format is much better in that aspect.
(as for “those having time to use mobile devices” I read SF on mine to redeem 5 minutes standing in line here or there, so that I am not wasting time at my desk -like now- when I should be working. It’s a time saver. I also prefer the look on my desktop.)

Posted by R. Eric Sawyer on 03-29-2008 at 04:20 PM

Hi have an ATT 8125 and it seems to work ok. I’ve not used the internet on it a lot just mostly email. Spending time with it should make it easier.

I will add to the few discenting voices on the redo that I do find it too bright and the text as I type this is too light. I guess there is an adjustment that can be made there.
I accually like and still do the old design because the “recent Comment’s were easier to see as well as the stories and comment.  It’s just me I guess.

I do offer praises for the “Around the Web” link.. That one I really like.

Peace this 2nd Sunday in Easter

I have an ATT 8525 just like Rome Anglican.  I just got it .  I am not very fluent yet(But I have learned that I need to get the bigger battery.) I like reading articles on it in odd spots
